Hands up all of you that were expecting a new Guru Guru album this year! Just as I thought not many! Oh, you want to go to the toilet, OK, so that’s none then!
I have to admit I would have kept my hand down (unless I wanted to go to the toilet) but like the rest of you I would have been pleasantly surprised! Yes, there is a new Guru Guru album (ROTATE!) released this year to celebrate their 50 years in rock.
For the uninitiated the band were founded in Germany in 1968 as The Guru Guru Groove by drummer and vocalist Mani Neumeier, Uli Trepte (bass) and Eddy Naegeli (guitar). During the course of their career they have released in excess of 30 albums. Not to be pigeonholed, over the years they have blended experimental rock, avant-garde, jazz and world music into their own unique and original style! I am going to be controversial here and say that (for me) their finest album was 1974’s Dance of the Flames, the only album with guitarist Houschäng Nejadepour who brought a certain je ne sais quoi to the sound!
These days Mani (drums/percussion/vocals) shares the stage with two long-standing companions. Roland Schaeffler (guitar/sax/vocals) and Peter Kuhmstedt (bass/vocals) have been with Guru Guru for more than 40 years. The passing of Hans Reffert, aged 69 (Feb. 21, 2016), was a severe blow, but with newly recruited guitar player Jan Lindqvist they overcame this tragedy and proved that they are not in the least tired of creating music.
I can’t vouch for the album as I am yet to hear it but I am just a little disappointed that Dagobert Duck’s 150th Birthday Party does not seem to be included!
